Nancy
Miller is a painter and printmaker who lives and
works in New York City. She graduated from Barnard College,
studied art at the Art Students League and Provincetown
Workshop, and received an MFA in Printmaking from the
City College of New York. Nancy S. Millers expressionist
images incorporate traditional landscape and figurative
painting, held together by elements of historical iconography.
The viewer can identify with familiar objects while being
confronted with images from less familiar cultures.
In Likewise Ladies, Ms. Miller bypasses abstraction
to create an autobiographical connection. Images of womens
dresses are fabricated out of decorative wrapping paper,
tissue paper, and scraps of found paper. The
collages hang on unstretched canvas, easily transported,
ready to be rolled and unrolled. Because the dresses lack
heads and faces, they remain anonymous, yet linked to
a lush and sometimes-ominous imaginary landscapes composed
of the artists torn prints and drawings. Miller
cannibalizes her own work to make these pieces, overlapping
layers of landscape drawings or torn prints to embed the
truncated figures in a field of landscape and flowers.
The choice of subject matter is not a retreat into literalism
but an advance into a new synthesis, incorporating elements
of the artists experience in each image as a personal
commentary.
Ms. Miller has exhibited in many one- and two-person shows
at prestigious galleries and museums throughout New York
City, Boston, and Connecticut. She has also exhibited
in group venues in numerous cities such as New York, East
Hampton, Southampton, Ft. Lauderdale, Tallahasse, Los
Angeles, Provincetown, and Palm Springs.
