Margery Small is a
native New Yorker. She received her BA from Brooklyn College where she majored in Education and Art History.
She taught elementary school emphasizing and sharing her love for art with her students.
Ms. Small received her MA in Studio Art at Adelphi University.
She is an artist who is concerned with the human psyche and events common to all people. Her paintings are about brief moments and interludes that make up the routines and rituals of everyday life.
She uses ideas, paints, cloth, papers and words to tell the stories of the human condition.
Ms. Small has had many solo shows and has participated in numerous group shows in New York City. She has received many awards for her paintings. Her work hangs in many private collections. Her two most recent awards are first prize in painting in the Iona College exhibit “The Female Gaze” and she has received an award for painting at the exhibit “Fast Forward” at the Brooke Street Gallery in SoHo, New York.
Margery Small is also a writer of poetry. In her exhibitions she often uses her own poetry to accompany her paintings. In response to one painting a reviewer wrote of her work, “Words leap across her canvases with bold slashes of paint”.
